Why "Pointman"?

In the military, the Point Man is the person chosen to scout the path ahead — the one who first spots danger and obstacles, who alerts the group to possible ambush, and who takes the first hits to protect those following. A Point Man gives direction and is responsible for selecting the right path for others to follow.
